War in the Middle East / March 2001

In September of 1993, Israel and the Palestinians began a seven year effort called the Middle East Peace Accord. It concluded in September of 2000 without agreement. The agreement broke down over the issue of Jerusalem and control of the temple mount. One man asserted Israel's right for Jews to access the temple mount by actually walking up on the mount. That man was a famous general and hero of Israel. His name is Ariel Sharon. The name "Ariel" means "the lion of God"; the name "Sharon" means "to straighten out or make smooth." Ariel Sharon is now the newly elected (by a land slide victory) Prime Minister of Israel. He intends to "straighten" a few things out on this Middle East peace business.

Since Sharon's venture to the temple mount in September of 2000, the Palestinians have used his visit as the pretext for wide spread violence and rioting. The peace process has come to a screeching halt with Arafat's preference for violence becoming blatantly apparent. The Palestinians don't want a peace agreement with Israel; they want Israel to drink sea water and live in the Mediterranean. They want to take anything and everything that the Jews have. In particular, the Palestinians want the ancient homeland and place of worship of the Jews to prove that their God, Allah, is superior to the God of Israel.

Let's review some historical facts before proceeding any further. Fact number one: there never has been a country or nation before in history called Palestine with a Palestinian people. Fact number two: Historical Palestine was a Roman province where a lot of rebellious people lived; they were called Jews. Fact number three: the world has been sold a falsehood that the Palestinians are trying to recover their ancient homeland. The fact is that the Palestinians are attempting to rid the world of Israel and the Jewish people. History has shown that the only thing that binds Palestinians together is their hatred of the Jews, specifically the nation of Israel.

Now back to the present… Yasser Arafat and the Palestinians have decided that they have negotiated all they can get from the peace process. Now is the time, they believe, for the Palestinians to take by force what they want. Therefore, since September of 2000, the Palestinians have been meeting and calling on the Arab world to prepare for war against Israel. You do not need to be a prophet to see this war coming.

Israel's tourism has fallen to a fraction of the past years. Daily conflicts in the land occur between the Israeli Defense Forces and Palestinian militia elements. The Arab League has been meeting regularly since last September. Historically, the Arab League only meets to plan major wars against Israel. Military arms are being smuggled into the Palestinian territories (some shipments have been captured by Israel). Neighboring Arab states are saber rattling and taking steps toward military engagement. Special United States Military units are quietly being sent to Israel. Some of these special units include Patriot anti-missile batteries.

In February of this year, the allied forces in Kuwait launched an attack on Iraq to hit a command, control, and communications C3 site. Damage was slight and the Iraqis escaped. The Iraqi site contained radar and communication equipment for air defense and missile control. In particular, it was the control center for launching ground-to-ground missiles (SCUD missiles). Many of you will recall that during the Gulf war in 1991 Iraq launched these type of missiles into Saudi Arabia and Israel. The U.S. led forces tried desperately to knock them out but to no avail. Their mobile ability eluded the best efforts of the allies. We all watched scenes of missile alerts and Patriot anti-missiles flying up to intercept them. There is a reason why the U.S. put Patriot missile batteries in Israel just before the attack on Iraq. There is deep concern that Iraq is about to attack Israel with those missiles again.

Sources in and out of Israel are now confirming that Iraq has moved six armored divisions with ground-to-ground missiles and launchers to the Syrian border. It is feared that young President Assad of Syria has given permission to Saddam Hussein for these units to move across the Syrian frontier to attack Israel. The Palestinians have planned with Iraq and Syria for something more than riots and rock throwing. As evidence of this plan, other sources say that Yasser Arafat has prepared a bunker in Baghdad for him to escape when the war breaks out.

Israel has communicated to Saddam Hussein through the British, that Israel will not tolerate missiles raining down on them as in the 1991 gulf war. Israel knows that the only sure way to stop the missile threat is to use neutron weapons while the forces are concentrated together. Apparently, this is the message that was communicated specifically to Hussein. On or around February 22, Israel went on missile alert and aircraft were launched heading for Iraq by both the U.S. and Israel. Intelligence indicated that Iraq was setting up the missiles and launchers together. At the last moment, Hussein stopped his missile preparations. The aircraft were recalled. We were moments from war in the Middle East.

Side bar question: Did you hear about this event in your newspaper or television news recently? Do you still really believe the western press is reporting the real news or just what they want you to know? Let me clue you in on something. The western press is not going to report anything that would make you like or support Israel in its present conflict (the Israelis are the bad guys and the Palestinians are the poor freedom fighter good guys, remember?). Israel defending themselves is not consistent with the desired storyline.

According to many Middle East observers, war is inevitable sometime this year. As evidenced by the February 22nd event, some believe it could begin tomorrow, but more likely, it will begin in the springtime or summer. The winter months are rainy and armored units hate the mud. The entire Middle East is wet and muddy right now. Therefore, the probability of war increases dramatically in the early April time frame.

Arafat and Saddam Hussein have always cooperated with one another even during the gulf war. As a result of Arafat's support of Iraq, Saudi Arabia cut off financial support to the Palestinians. Most people in the world have a correct perception of Saddam Hussein as a ruthless warmongering dictator. Yasser Arafat is his best friend. So it should not surprise us that if Arafat wishes to get hostile with Israel, then Iraq won't be far behind. Further proof of that relationship is Iraq's financial gifts to the Palestinian martyrs – $12,000 each. However, the money is not getting to the families; it is paying for smuggled weapons into the west bank. The Palestinian Authority is on the verge of financial collapse because of the uprising. This is another factor toward the belief that war is soon and inevitable.

All of the previous factors and others have led many analysts to predict a short but very dramatic war in the Middle East. Let me relate the steps of a possible scenario that many observers believe is likely.

Step one: The Palestinians will begin to increase the uprising by using heavier weapons that were previously hidden. These will be used to engage Israeli armor and helo gun ships. They will range from anti tank rockets to ground-to-air weapons. Rock throwing will turn into actual firefights with small units (50 to 100 men). We are almost at this level now. The Palestinians will be attempting to engage and commit Israeli units to numerous conflicts. How they will do this is simple: the Palestinians will attack the more than 60 Jewish settlements scattered in the West Bank region. As Israeli forces move in to defend, the heavier Palestinian units will ambush and try to destroy the Israeli units.

Step two: The Iranian backed and Syrian supported Hezballah units in southern Lebanon will open up with long range Katushya rockets upon Israel's northern cities, such as Nahariya and Haifa. Israel will respond with limited ground action (artillery fire) and multiple air strikes, further committing IDF units.

Step three: Syria will use the Israeli response to Hezballah attacks as the pretext for a wider action. Syria will initiate a massive SCUD missile launch into Israeli cities. They will be joined by the Iraqi missile units. The real question will be whether chemical weapons will be used in these attacks. Syria is known to have chemical weapons such as VX gas. Iraq is known to have biological weapons such as anthrax. These weapons are rightly classified as weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Major cities in Israel will be hit including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem causing great fear and disruption. As soon as the missile rocket motors ignite, Israel will know of their launching and threat azimuth. As a result of the gulf war in 1991, Israel acquired the use of some specially placed DSP (Defense Support Program) satellites in geosynchronous orbit over the Middle East. These satellites can detect the missile exhaust using an infrared focal plane and are part of the U.S. satellite early warning system (SEWS). Ground stations connected to the satellites then interpret the heat signature as to the type of weapons and its initial launch arc. The flight of the missile is only a matter of minutes to their targets, but Israel will know about the missiles intentions within seconds after it launches. Some of these incoming missiles will be intercepted by the Patriot missile batteries; however, this will not be effective as a defense. Depending upon the number of missiles launched, the Patriot anti-missile batteries will be overwhelmed with targets with the full knowledge of their impending attack.

Step four: Regional war breaks out in the Middle East with the predominate attack coming from the north. Iraq sends its armored units to engage Israel. Whether these units travel only on Syrian roads toward the Golan Heights is not sure. They may also travel across Jordan expanding the attack into the Jordan valley. Syrian forces will launch a full scale attack on the Golan Heights. The Palestinians will start celebrating early, expecting Syrian and Iraqi armor to arrive shortly. Egypt will not attack. Their best strategy is to wait and jump in just as victory is inevitable. From a strategic standpoint, they remain poised as a reserve element able to open another front in the war. Saudi Arabia and its Persian Gulf neighbors will become more fearful of Iraq and Iran and what may follow. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait may catch a few Iraqi missiles of their own. The United States will be purposely slow to respond to Israel's immediate needs, preferring to cover the Arab oil sources. Israel will find themselves alone and over committed.

Step five: The combination of SCUD missiles, Palestinian armed interference, and a major northern invasion will take their toll on Israel. It will not look good for Israel. They will evacuate the Jewish settlements in the Samarian and Judean mountains. Press reports will be extremely limited, but any report that looks bad for Israel will be spread world wide. Arafat will be watching CNN from Baghdad, planning his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. In fact, many believe they will be watching Israel's demise and a major Arab victory at hand.

There are many in the Arab world meeting in the Arab League that believe this is their future. They are arguing over who will get what part of the spoils once Israel is destroyed. Syria wants the Golan Heights. Saddam Hussein wants to be the messiah of the Arab world. The Palestinians want Jewish homes and cars. Arafat wants the glory of capturing Jerusalem. However, according to the ancient prophets of Israel, something else will happen.

It will be swift and ferocious. It will be fire from heaven and it will rain down on the Palestinians in the mountains of Israel. It will fall upon Damascus and Syria. It will hit Jordan and Iraq. All who are part of the invasion and the conflict will suffer greatly. The face of the Middle East will never be the same again. Initially, the world will see it as a nuclear conflict in the modern age, but because prophets have written about it more than 2,500 years ago, we will know the God of Israel has shown His hand.

The world will gasp at the suddenness and devastation upon Israel's enemies. One thought will begin to take shape as details come in after the battle. Surely, there is a God in the midst of Israel. That God will not be Allah; instead, He will be the Almighty God, the Mighty One of Jacob, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The world will reel with the fact that there is no God like the God of Israel.

The people of Israel will be moved by this realization in a bold and dramatic way. Not only has God changed the status of their arch enemies to non-existent, but God has shown that His favor is clearly with Israel. The same prophets who described God's devastation of their enemies have also described how God will turn to restore the fortunes of Jacob in our day.

It will be the end of the "times of the Gentiles." It will the end of the exile for Israel among the nations. It will be the time for the reunification of the House of Judah and the House of Israel. It will be the time for the outpouring of God's Spirit on the whole house of Israel. It will be the final preparation for the great tribulation – the time for Jacob's trouble. It will be the time for the outpouring of God's Spirit on all mankind.

Modern Israel is a miracle of God in our day; however, the same nation is fraught with the same mistakes of the past. Ancient Israel was warned not to make agreements with their enemies nor with the inhabitants of the land. The reason is pretty obvious. Israel's enemies use these agreements as an alternative to combat, in an effort to weaken Israel. By entangling Israel in these protracted agreements, the clarity of issues is fogged and the resolve to stand firm is filled with confusion and deceit. The good guys are mixed with the bad guys and Israel loses heart and confidence in her own identity. In particular, Israel's identity in the God of Israel is presently severely diminished. This is what has happened to Israel in our generation. We have seen glimpses of Israel's true identity but only after a major conflict or war (war of Independence in '48, Jerusalem captured in '67, the Yom Kippur war of 73, etc.).

The present conflict in Israel is connected to and entangled in the previous 7 year negotiations. Arafat has successfully painted the Palestinians as a people seeking self-determination and a national homeland. He has appealed to the highest ideals of democracy and peaceful co-existence. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Each act of terror and violence by Palestinian men (sent by him secretly) is rationalized with, "This is what you should expect when Israel oppresses us so long." The oppression Arafat is really referring to is Israel's mere existence. In particular, Arafat regards Israel's presence in the Middle East as a pimple on the nose of every Muslim. If you have ever seen a child work themselves into a temper tantrum, then you can begin to understand Palestinian outrage.

But don't misunderstand what I am saying and accuse me of hating the Palestinians. The Palestinian people are not inherently bad and Israel is not inherently good. The dynamics here are spiritual. This is the outworking of a conflict between the God of Israel and Allah, the God of the Muslims. There is a huge difference between these two gods.

Arafat has been successfully gaining world support for the Palestinian cause not because of the goodness of the Palestinians; rather, the world hates the God of Israel. The fact is that the world hates God to begin with and Israel because of God. This is the reason why normal reasonable democratic nations find agreement with a tyrant, murderer, terrorist, and dictator like Yasser Arafat. This is the reason that other divergent groups who have nothing in common can come together with a common cause like abortion rights and homosexuality. They share the same hatred of God. Anyone speaking honorably of God, His virtues, His character, or His standards is immediately judged as not worthy of living. Just as the prophets foretold, the righteous are judged as guilty and the guilty are judged as righteous. Arafat refers to the devout, religious Jews as extremists. Elsewhere in the world, homosexuals and abortionists think of religious Christians as right wing, extremist, fundamentalists. This is the reason for Arafat's success in the western world; it is based on the common hatred of God.

And you will be hated by all on account of My name, …
Mark 13:13

Since the conflict has to do with the haters of God, it is only appropriate that God fight His own battle. The Middle East and the present conflict in Israel is the stage being set for such a battle. The prophets Ezekiel and Joel speak specifically to the conflict in question and why God will make Himself known to enemies by destroying them and to us by pouring Himself out for our benefit.

"And it will come about on that day, when Gog comes against the land of Israel," declares the Lord God, "That My fury will mount up in My anger. And in My zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. And the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down, the steep pathways will collapse, and every wall will fall to the ground. And I shall call for a sword against him on all My mountains," declares the Lord God. "Every man's sword will be against his brother. And with pestilence and with blood I shall enter into judgment with him; and I shall rain on him, and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, with hailstones, fire, and brimstone. And I shall magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations; and they will know that I am the Lord."
Ezekiel 38:18-23

Ezekiel describes a battle involving a northern invading army and those in the mountains of Israel fighting against Him. Through the prophet, God addresses specifically His direct actions in this conflict.

Let me pose a theological question at this juncture. Let's say that the war in the Middle East breaks out shortly. Let's say that you watch attentively and see Israel use its nuclear arsenal against its enemies. Specifically, we watch Israel snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Let's say that the victory is complete. Not only are the weapons used in the mountains of Israel, but Damascus, Ammon, Bagdad are utterly destroyed. There is no question that the world would be in shock and stunned by the change. Given this scenario, would you then say that God had done it?

I believe this is exactly how God works. We do not believe because of what we see; instead, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Yeshua said it this way.

But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.
Mark 13:23

Why did He tell us in advance? So that we might believe. This is the fundamental reason for prophecy given to us, so that we might believe in God and see His hand as it moves. The rest of the world sees natural events; we see the hand of God.

"And My holy name I shall make known in the midst of My people Israel; and I shall not let My holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. Behold, it is coming and it shall be done," declares the Lord God. "That is the day of which I have spoken."
Ezekiel 39:7-8

God has spoken beforehand of our day and the battle that is to happen. He reminds us of that fact. Therefore, we will know that He did it by having said it before.

"And I shall set My glory among the nations; and all the nations will see My judgment which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them. And the house of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God from that day onward. And the nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile for their iniquity because they acted treacherously against Me, and I hid My face from them; so I gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and all of them fell by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I dealt with them, and I hid My face from them."
Ezekiel 39:21-24

While we see the modern state of Israel and understand how God scattered Israel throughout the nations and has begun to gather them in our generation, Israel doesn't get it. Many in Israel can not deal with the fact that God judged them for unbelief and disobedience by sending them out of the land. Given that some churchmen have abused this historical fact and exploited the situation since 70 A.D., the church has further oppressed the Jewish people. Israel doesn't want to believe that they were being punished by God and in any way justify church thinking. Until they recognize their own behavior toward God and their need for repentance, full reconciliation is in the future. The war we are about to see is to accomplish this realization for Israel. The house of Israel is to know they went into exile for their iniquity. This will be done by God's deliverance and victory in this war. This is absolutely essential if Israel is to be spiritually restored in the last days. This is an essential understanding to the ending of the "times of the Gentiles," when Israel is saved.

Yeshua spoke of Israel's dispersion in the nations until the "time of the Gentiles be fulfilled."

…and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
Luke 21:24

Paul spoke of the same event this way quoting from the prophet Isaiah.

For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in; and thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Jacob. And this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins."
Romans 11:25-27

So let's stop and catch our breath a moment. The Ezekiel 38-39 war in the mountains of Israel is to bring about the end of the "times of the Gentiles." This is to show how God has turned again to Israel's favor and has reversed His policy of Israel being judged by the nations.

Therefore thus says the Lord God, "Now I shall restore the fortunes of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I shall be jealous for My holy name. And they shall forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. And I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I shall have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel," declares the Lord God.
Ezekiel 39:25-29

God makes a dramatic shift from the judgment of Israel scattered in the nations to restoring the fortunes of Jacob. God says that He will be sanctified (set apart) through Israel in the sight of all nations by this war. God says that Israel will finally understand the exile and that God's face will be turned toward the whole house of Israel. This means that God's judgment upon Israel is over; the times of the Gentiles is complete; the reunification of the two houses is to occur; and, the Spirit of God is to be poured out upon Israel and all believers.

In recent years, many Messianic brethren have come to terms with their true identity of Israel in the nations as part of two houses – the house of Judah and the house of Israel. Ezekiel said in chapter 37 that these two houses would be reunified one day after their dispersal in the nations. But when does this reunification happen? It hasn't happened yet. (Even two house teachers are hoping for it but admit it hasn't happened.) According to Ezekiel, it happens in the aftermath of the Ezekiel 38-39 war. The only way the two houses can be truly reunified is if the Spirit of God moves in every nation and He draws everyone of us to this realization. Just as the nation of Israel must realize the reasons for our exile and God's salvation, the same is true for all Messianic Israel to be reunified – we must see the Spirit of God move and He must accomplish it.

It is this last part that should make us sit up with wonder and amazement. Most evangelical believers have heard preachers claim that the Holy Spirit was and is being poured out in our days. Looking back 2,000 years ago on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came like a rushing wind with tongues of fire upon the first New Covenant believers. Peter preached that this was like what the prophet Joel spoke of. I say like because the prophecy of Joel really speaks of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that comes after a great northern army against Israel is vanquished. It speaks of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit coming after the fortunes of Jacob are restored by God. I am not saying that the Holy Spirit wasn't given on the day of Pentecost (Shavuot). I am saying that Joel specifically spoke of the same event that Ezekiel prophesied of – the aftermath of a war when Israel would understand the reasons for her exile, when the two houses are together, when the name of Israel will never be put to shame again. In Peter's day, the scattering of Israel into the nations and their resulting shame had not yet begun. But, listen to what must happen before and after the prophesied outpouring of His Spirit upon mankind.

And it will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. And even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. And I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, blood, fire, and columns of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
Joel 2:28-31

Notice that the prophet refers to something happening prior to the outpouring. "And it will come about after this…" The outpouring of the Spirit comes about after what? Let us examine what Joel said just before this. It matches what Ezekiel said would happen before the outpouring of the Spirit upon the house of Israel.

Then the Lord will be zealous for His land, and will have pity on His people. And the Lord will answer and say to His people, "Behold, I am going to send you grain, new wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied in full with them; and I will never again make you a reproach among the nations. But I will remove the northern army far from you, and I will drive it into a parched and desolate land, and its vanguard into the eastern sea, and its rear guard into the western sea. And its stench will arise and its foul smell will come up, for it has done great things."
Joel 2:18-20

God says that He will turn His attention to the land of Israel. He says that Israel will not be a reproach among the nations like they were in the exile. He says that the northern army that attacked will be destroyed between the eastern sea (the Dead Sea) and the western sea (the Mediterranean Sea). That means the battle in is the mountains of Israel that separate those two seas. He says that the enemies will fall upon the earth and cause a stench. Ezekiel say that Israel will be burying the dead for seven months to clean the land.

This is the same conflict that Ezekiel spoke of; but Joel continues.

Do not fear, O land, rejoice and be glad, for the Lord has done great things. Do not fear, beasts of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness have turned green, for the tree has borne its fruit, the fig tree and the vine have yielded in full. So rejoice, O sons of Zion, and be glad in the Lord your God; for He has given you the early rain for your vindication. And He has poured down for you the rain, the early and latter rain as before. And the threshing floors will be full of grain, and the vats will overflow with the new wine and oil. Then I will make up to you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the creeping locust, the stripping locust, and the gnawing locust, my great army which I sent among you. And you shall have plenty to eat and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; then My people will never be put to shame. Thus you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the Lord your God and there is no other; and My people will never be put to shame.
Joel 2:21-27

The Lord says that there is a day coming when Israel will know that the Lord is in her midst. He says we will know that there is no other God and Israel will never be put to shame again as they were in the exile. Then it says, God will pour out His Spirit on all mankind, on those who know Him.

The aftermath of the war coming in the Middle East will be more than the use of nuclear weapons. It will be more than the changed political face of the Middle East. It will be more than all nations stunned by God's mighty hand. It will result in a change in Israel and the people of God. We will know that God is in our midst. He will pour out His Spirit upon us. He will restore the fortunes of Jacob. He will reunite the whole house of Israel. The time of the Gentiles will be fulfilled. The stage will be set for the coming of the antimessiah (the great tribulation) and the return of our Messiah Yeshua.

In the past, Israel's enemies have preferred to attack Israel during their holiday periods. Many of you may remember the Yom Kippur war in the fall of 1973. Anticipation is brewing for this spring during the Passover (April of this year). If the war begins then, watch even closer for seven weeks later. May 27th is the first day of the week after seven weeks. That is Shavuot, the feast of weeks. This is when God gave the ten commandments and the Holy Spirit was poured out for the New Covenant believers. Would it not be fascinating to see God follow the very pattern to prepare us for the final revelation of Yeshua the Messiah? It would be more than fascinating.

The fire came down the mountain for Moses. The fire came upon their heads at Pentecost. The fire will come down upon the enemies of Israel and that fire will fill our tabernacles in the aftermath. If you find yourself reading this article after the war in the Middle East, I hope that it will also encourage you to understand God's great purpose for us in these last days. I hope that you will see that God planned this from a long time ago, so that we might see Him and understand. I hope that His Spirit will fill you soon.
